Why Wood Can Be Body-Safe (When Done Right)
How proper sealing turns porous hardwood into a non-porous, body-safe surface, and how we make sure every piece of ours gets there.
The first question people ask us about wooden dildos is always the same: “Isn’t wood porous?” It is. After years of making dildos, first as Raw Love Studio and now as Wooden Dildo Co, our answer is that the wood itself was never the problem. The surface is.
The honest starting point
Raw wood is made of tiny vessels and fibres that once carried water through a living tree. On an unfinished surface, those openings can hold moisture, lubricant and bacteria. That’s exactly why we never let bare wood touch skin.
A body-safe wooden dildo is one where the wood never actually touches the body. A continuous, fully cured, non-porous seal does.
What “done right” means in our workshop
These are the four things we won’t compromise on for any piece:
- A dense, stable hardwood. Tight-grained species have smaller pores and move less with humidity, so the seal has a calm, stable surface to sit on.
- A surface sanded to a very fine grit. Every scratch or torn fibre becomes a weak point in the coating. We sand progressively to 1000 grit and beyond before any finish goes on.
- Several thin coats of a documented body-safe finish. We build the seal up evenly so there are no thin spots on the tip, the edges of the base, or the underside.
- A full cure, not just dry to the touch. Many finishes feel dry within hours but keep hardening for weeks. Nothing of ours is used or sold before that.
What you get from it
A properly sealed piece is smooth, rigid and almost glassy. It cleans like any other non-porous toy, works with water-based and silicone lubricants, and holds temperature beautifully. Run it under warm water and it stays warm.
Our commitment
We use only documented body-safe finishes, and every piece gets the full cure time. If we can’t stand completely behind a seal, the piece doesn’t leave our workshop. If you’d like to see the whole process, read How to Make a Wooden Dildo.
